Running the Race

olympicRings

2012 is Olympics year in the United Kingdom. In the Olympics we have all the excitement and challenge of athletics.

Sporting images are used often in the New Testament to speak of the challenge, discipline and achievement of living life with Christ.

This set of Lent studies is based on Hebrews 11.1-12.4.

The studies raise questions about what it means to believe;

how we face up to difficulties and doubts;

and the challenges of obedience to God.

Berlioz: Te Deum

& Fauré: Requiem

Saturday 24th March

at 7pm in Gloucester Cathedral
Gloucester and Bristol Choral Societies will be joined by a children’s choir and huge orchestra to perform an astonishing, majestic and awe-inspiring work by Berlioz as well as the full symphonic version of the well-loved, colourful and beautiful Requiem by Fauré. This will be an evening to celebrate two contrasting monuments of nineteenth century French music and there couldn’t be a better place to appreciate them than in the magnificent Gloucester Cathedral.

Lent Lunches

St Mary's Church in Berkeley will be again offering delicious homemade soup and bread lunches, followed by coffee and tea, on Wednesday lunchtimes during Lent starting the week after Ash Wednesday and finishing the week before Holy Week. There is no charge, but a bowl will be set aside for donations to charity. This year we are planning on supporting Water Aid which helps African villages to have a reliable clean water supply.
Come along for a sustaining break and friendly conversation at the back of St Mary’s Church from 12.30-1.30pm on the five Wednesdays from 29th February through to 28th March.
Volunteers for making soup, baking/buying bread or helping on the day should contact Jean Stanton on 511081 or Sue Stump on 810273. There will be a list for signing up on the table at the back of the church from the end of January.

Ladies Home Group

A chance to get together with other women to talk about God and life, drink tea and eat cake.
We are going to be using a DVD based bible study by "Frances Chan" from his book "Crazy Love" when we meet next on Tuesday 7th February at 8pm.

Prayers

In the Anglican cycle of prayer, we pray today for the Anglican Church of Canada, and for The Most Revd. Frederick Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada.
In the diocese of Gloucester, we pray for Richard Mitchell, Chair of the House of Clergy and for Ian Marsh, Chair of the House of Laity.

On this Education Sunday, we pray for our primary school here in Berkeley – for the Head Teacher and staff. We pray too, for all who work in education.
We pray for the BOB training course, which has continued this weekend with our children in Berkeley; for all involved in running the course, and for the children participating.
