We have been invited to visit the John Taylor & Co Bellfoundry and Museum on Monday 21st August, where the Berkeley bells are being cleaned, tuned and assembled into a new frame. Those who are ringers will also be able to have a tinkle on the light ring of 12 bells at the Foundry.
A coach has been arranged for a cost of £15 (£5 for children and students) which will depart from Berkeley Primary School at 08.45. We anticipate arrival in Loughborough at 11.30-12.00 where people can find a lunch to suit them. The coach will then take us to the Foundry for 13.30. After the tour and ringing we expect to depart around 16.30 and arrive back in Berkeley by about 19.00. There is a limit of 35 visitors, so first come first served. Tim Soanes is collecting names.
It’s that time of year when the team at the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust (GHCT) start dusting off the walking boots, pumping our bike tyres or getting together with friends to plan a driving tour around some of our wonderful local churches. We’re asking anyone who appreciates our region’s historic churches to consider taking part in GHCT’s sponsored Ride + Stride event on September 9.
It’s a great day out which people travel between churches, exploring the area and discovering unique historic buildings. The money raised is split between the Trust and your nominated church – so you’ll be raising money directly for your chosen church.
“Our online map now features nearly every church in Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire and North Bristol, and will be regularly updated to help you plan a route”, said Glenn Duff, County Organiser. “Those offering a welcome will be highlighted, along with organised groups of walkers or cyclists.”
Ride + Stride welcomes cyclists of all abilities, as well as walkers, horse-riders and drivers. Just as important are those who take part welcoming others to their church – perhaps getting sponsored to play music, clean the church or mow the churchyard. If your church doesn’t have a Local Organiser, perhaps you could co-ordinate the activity?
Contact Glenn if you’d like to know more about taking part, to order a banner advertising the event or to update the information for your church:
