Christmas may be a long way away, but it is time once more to launch the SHOEBOX APPEAL. Help in the spread of love and pure pleasure to children in poverty this Christmas by filling a wrapped shoebox (or several) with lots of gifts. Berkeley churches and other community organisations have supported Operation Christmas Child for most of the 25 years it has been happening. It started in a small way with a truck of shoeboxes full of gifts for children heading across Europe to orphanages in Romania. Now the shoeboxes go to more than 150 countries and last year more than a million were delivered from Britain. Operation Christmas Child is run under the umbrella of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief and development organisation.
Each shoebox spreads a message of love and pure pleasure to children in poverty at Christmas. You can be part of that by filling a wrapped shoebox with of gifts. Please collect one of the Samaritan’s Purse leaflets from the entrance table in St Mary’s Church, or go to the website: https://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/how-to-pack-a-shoebox/ Be sure to follow the guidance on the sort of gifts that can go into a shoebox.
Please bring your filled shoeboxes to one of the services on Sunday 5th November 2017, ready for collection and distribution by Samaritan’s Purse. Thank you.
The restoration work on the bells and bell tower is nearing completion and to mark this achievement there will be a celebration event in the Great Hall at Berkeley Castle on Sunday 12th November from 4.30-6.00pm, to which all members of the congregation are invited. The bells will be rung between 2pm and 3pm immediately prior to the Civic service of Remembrance at 3pm that day. Drinks and canapes will be served in the Great Hall from 4.30, so please let Debbie Page know if you will be joining us and whether you have any dietary requirements we need to cater for by Sunday 5th November, E-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org).
